This week’s Random Act of Kid-ness is a local one. Yesterday was the 19th annual Kids Ocean Day Adopt-A-Beach Clean-Up in Los Angeles, where 5,000 kids came to not only clean up Dockweiler State Beach, but they also created a human mosaic of a shark holding a shield that said “Defend the Sea.”
The Adopt-A-Beach Clean-Up day was the culmination of a year-long program in local schools by the Malibu Foundation for Environmental Education. It is one of six in California, sponsored by the California Coastal Commission. Mary Shallenberger, chair of the Commission, said:
“These kids are like modern-day knights in shining armor. They are asking us to join them in defending our ocean from marine debris and other forms of pollution that harm marine life.”
